Ingram Marshall
The Fragility Cycles
lp - $40
IBU
Ingram Marshall took classes in electronic music with Ussachevsky while he was at Columbia. Then he went to California to study with Morton Subotnick and served as his graduate assistant. Then he moved to Bali to study the gamelan. After that he was a Fulbright scholar in Sweden. Then he made the sealed original press LP yr about to cop, which was recorded at Charlemagne Palestine’s loft in ‘77. ’77.
He has received a Guggenheim fellowship. His work has been commissioned by the LA Philharmonic, Kronos Quartet and Bang-On-A-Can. John Adams has premiered Marshall’s work at the San Francisco Symphony. But Fragility Cycles is before all of that and it ain’t some academic smoke and mirrors unless the smoke is from angel dust and the mirrors are all broke up. This is just a young weirdo with a synth, some tapes a mic and whole lot of out-fucking-there ideas. In ’77 I might remind you.
If Skaters or Emeralds or any lesser spirit/noise/synth/drone band put this out today people would shit they drawers and herald it as their best work. This is truly one of the most beautifully, haunting, screwed, chopped and fucked pieces a person can own.
