Joe Morris has been heralded as the very essence of post-Bailey and post-Jim Hall guitar. This is no small feat and while his bass playing has found it’s place and his music has evolved both towards and away from a more inside line Morris is an experimentalist at heart and this record is documented fact of that statement. Featuring Sebastian Steinberg, long-time drummer Jerry Deupree as well as AACM drummer Thurman Barker who recorded on the 1967 Art Ensemble of Chicago Nessa LP, Muhal Richard Abrams Levels And Degrees of Light and Joseph Jarman’s first LP As If It Were Te Seasons on the Delmark label. The Barker sides tend to show a heavy Ornette/Bern Nix line and adhere to a more structured form where as the Deupree sides are absolutely weird and searching and could teach any number of improv do-gooders a thing or two hundred about the balance of virtuosity and rawness and the super string face-offs between Morris and Steinberg are beyond compare. return to store
