Joe Morris
Wraparound
lp - $25
Riti
Self-published on Morris’s Riti label [which has now been pressing for more than 25 years!] this is one of the best examples of Morris’s approach to self-effacing guitar pyrotechnics and excoriated swing. This LP features long-time bassist Sebastian Steinberg [from Soul Coughing?!] as well as one of the baddest motherfuckers alive, Laurence Cook on drums. Cook’s completely illuminating performance on Bill Dixon’s November 1981 is perhaps the most formally beautiful, technically interesting, swinging and far-reaching playing on most any free jazz album. Completely valid to say that on that particular document he stands with Cyrille’s best playing on the Cecil Taylor’s Blue Note sides and later, Mark Dresser’s playing with Braxton particularly on Willisau. Not to mention the fact that his supergroup, The Laurence Cook Disaster Unit with Greg Kelley, Jason Lescalleet and Vic Rawlings is his only group as a leader after 40 years in the game. Morris has played with some dynamite drummers thru the years but few who presented him with so many avenues of thought and process in real time without losing an iota of swing.
